Best way to stop smoking

Its evil and disgusting, and I can't stop.

I'd really like some Clockwork Orange style mind messing, so that every time I put one in my mouth, I would be sick and collapse.

There are aversive conditioning techniques used for quitting smoking. You can buy these little slivers you stick in the cig that taste bad. Another technique is called smoke holding, in which you don't inhale the smoke right away, but you hold it in your mouth for a while. Tastes bad.

I believe in them. I still think that when I quit smoking it was partially because I was sick and had a sore throat, and they just tasted awful.

I don't condone binge use of alchohol.

    but

Wait until you've got a pretty decent hangover, you should be able to hold out pretty easy the first day.

Gum and lots of it (not the nicotine type either)

    How about some abuse?

Your weak and spineless!!! Where's your will power man?!?

    Or

I have head that if you take the contents of some ashtrays and put them in a jar, then add about the same about of water...

Point 1) Do you rally want shit like that on your lungs?

Point 2) Open it and have a whiff every time you feel like a drag.

I still think the best way to stop is with good old will power! You want more degrading abuse to help you?

Mentally accepting that the only reasons you smoke is chemical dependancy, habit and social conditioning is a good first step. Forget all that, "it calms me down", "helps me relax", "I like the taste" crap.

That's the main message of a famous book about giving up whose name I don't remember right now. Ah! Amazon to the rescue:

Allen Carr's Easy Way to Stop Smoking

I've heard good things about it.

I was wondering, as I actually roll my own, (I really hate manufactured cigarettes), if rolling tobacco is less harmful than manufactured.

Not if you don't use a filter. It's much worse.

Go on a week or two week long backpacking trip, don't bring cigarettes.

Richard Harris used to have a bar cabinet fully stocked with Vodka...after he went sober. Just knowing it was there was enough not to drink it I guess. Buy a pack of cigarettes and keep it unopened in your pocket and whenever you get the craving...just think, "Its there, I'll have one later..."

Worked for me...for about a week.

Try cutting down day by day. ...12 to 6 to 3 to 2 to 1.

The only "real" smoker (addict) I know that quit didn't have any special trick to it. He smoked a pack a day for three, four years. He had tried to quit maybe three times before, the "quits" never lasted for more than a few days at most. I think the deciding factor was that this time he did it for himself, instead of pressure from his parents/girlfriend/etc.

Personally, I think you should just stop buying cigarettes and let them run out. Don't keep any handy. Never buy a pack again. Your choice if you want to bum an occasional cig from others, you can't maintain an addiction with that amount. This is sorta what I did when I decided to stop drinking soda. I figured, it's okay for me to drink them occasionally when I'm out partying and whatnot, as long as I never buy cans or bottles from a store and stick them in the fridge. Now I don't generally even want the occasional one.
