How long is the ipods battery supposed to last before it dies? How easy is it to replace it?

I have the 10 gig (now the old version) iPod, purchased less then 2 months ago. I find the battery lasts between 8-10 hours, however, the indicators (the four bars to display the current power) don't work so well. If I don't charge the ipod for say, three days, and I listen to it for about 3 hours/day (so now it should be dead, yes) there are still 2 of 4 'bars' of energry showing. And then It dies.
It does not do this, if I use all the power in one day.
The battery life, is good. As for replacing it, I have not tried.. but to put it simply, there are no screws on the case. I think you need to squeeze the case to take it apart. Its like trying to add ram to the first colour-case iMacs (I failed at doing that the other day,
little machine bits
all over the floor, but I got it back together!). Frankly, by the time the battery starts to lose the charge (nice Li-Ion) a year or more should have passed. So you might as well get a new one.
On a side note, should I sell my newish ipod, and get the 20gig? I think so.

Wow. So after a year or two the rechargeable battery dies, and there's no way to replace it ?!? What do you do then? Toss it in the garbage?

You do yourself a favor and buy it at CompUSA and pay 29 dollars for a two year warranty
I'd say in 2 years another ipod will be bigger, better, and cheaper than a battery replacement anyways. Look how far the ipod has already come, from a 5 gig only to a 10 and 20gb option now.

So how much does it cost to replace the battery?

I'm using my iPod for about 8 months and the battery still work fine. But I've got the same problem with the wrong status of remaining battery. If it says 50% battery left, it only plays for one hour at max.
End of Line

I could be wrong and you can check but apple used a different type of lithiumm batter then most types of cell phones and other devices use so it should last longer.
