Apple Readies MPEG-4 Quicktime Update

According to an article on the Internetnews website Apple is soon to update Quicktime. Also interesting is some news that hasn't been mentioned here, I believe:

A recent report on media player market share sales for client and enterprise applications by research firm Frost & Sullivan showed Apple moving into second position with 36.8 percent of the market, after running a distant third a few years ago. That puts Apple above Real, which controls 24.9 percent and not too far off from Microsoft and its share of 38.2 percent.

I'd say Apple is moving full speed ahead to make Quicktime #1.

"Earlier this year, Apple demonstrated MPEG-4 part 10 showing content encoded at full HD resolution (1920x1080 24 frames progressive) and played back between 6.8 and 8 Mbps on one of Apple's current dual-processor computers. The company suggests that H.264/AVC is the likely successor to MPEG-2, which is still the industry standard."





I just want AVC. For those unaware your standard DVD has a maximum of 11Mbps. Think about that now. MPEG2 takes up to 11Mbps to encode video in the resolution of 720x480. Now compare the efficiency of AVC nee MPEG4 Part 10. It can encode 1920x1080 at under 11Mbps. That is freakin amazing. The only issue is processing power. AVC is going to cost you roughly 8x the power to encode and 4x the power to decode. MPEG2= 1x



So in order to achieve this fantastic resolution and compression we're going to need horsepower and lots of it. This is where grid computing might pay dividends.

What Apple also needs to do is to strike a deal with all those porn video sites.



Over 90% of them are using WMV.



If Apple takes this market then QT will capture at least 60% of global share
