Are Six Slotted Machines Still At All Important?

I haven't heard anyone complain about the continued absence of a six slotted G5. The last Mac to feature six slots was the 9600, for reference. Are six slots at all important to pros in this day, or do three slots (along with AGP) suffice most all of the time?

What could you need? RT card=1 slot, another card for hi-def or audio=1 slot, and maybe a fiber channel raid card=1 slot

These new G5's only have two useable slots for most professionals. If you're a professional, you want the highest-end card, the 9800XT, and this card according to Apple uses up two slots.

No lack of PCI slots used to the be #1 complaint by people. Kinda reminds me a lot of the HD bay complaints of today.

Back in the day you could setup a Protools rig that took 3 PCI slots for cards. Heck you probably could still do that but that would be excessive.

Now with motherboard integration being so complete an AGP slot and 3 PCI slots will take care of you just fine. As for Protools. They have consolidated power that would take two or more cards and put them on one card. With each sucessive upgrade users needed less and less cards to accomplish the same track counts and effects.

    Disagree.

We have about sixty Pro Tools rigs where I work and having to buy an expansion chasis for a majority of those systems sucks.

Even with Pro Tools HD, we still need slots for fibre channel, video capture, etc.

Sure, Production and Post-Production for Film is somewhat of a niche market, but we need more than three damn slots.

You excessive bastards!!! All the reason for Apple to create an Xstation with more slots and more goodies. I believe Apple's top monster should evoke lust and envy. sorry but $3k models just don't do that for me. However a

    Quad CPU

    16 ram slots

    6 PCI-X

    U320 SCSI onboard

would stir a little passion in me.

If I were you I would ask that question at arstechnica, or hardOCP. There are a lot of PC users there, and they are the ones with all the slots.

A major motion picture studio (sound department specifically) in Los Angeles.

How to get a job here? Pay your dues like most others do. Start at the bottom and work your way up.

Hard work does really pay off in the end.
