VCs fund cluster software toolmaker

Powerllel, which focuses on running server software across a group of computers rather than on a single machine, has raised $5.6 million. Kodiak Venture Partners and Castile Ventures led the investment, which will be used for sales, marketing and product development, the New York start-up said Monday.

Powerllel sells software to help companies make their own programs work better on a cluster, or grid of interconnected machines. The software tools, which can be used either to create new programs or to modify existing ones, are aimed at companies with software in markets such as energy, manufacturing and life sciences.
