Teminal disk mode-Why so f'n hot?

My 17" 1GHZ 10.3.4 1GB PB gets almost to hot to touch when in firewire disk mode. When at the lab at school scanning film I usually use that mode and save directly to my machine w/o using the network, because it is much faster. The only problem is that my machine gets SUPER hot. I don't close the lid and I prop it up about an inch, but it still gets blazin' hot. Why is this?
