Final Cut Pro masking question

I'm making a basketball highlight reel for someone, and I need a way to add a highlight (using a mask in FCP) the person I'm doing the video for. FCP allows masks, but not feathering. I dont want to do a garbage mask because you have to move all 4 points individually for every movement, and that would take forever. 'Mask shape' is exactly what I'm after, but you cant feather it. I have no idea why such an obvious thing was left out, as feathering masks is crucial. Anyways, I may have to use After Effects, but I really dont want to. Any advice is appreciated.

edit: using FCP HD btw

try using mask shape on a seperate layer and then add a slight blur to that layer.

Intensive processing but I imagine it will work.
