Under disk utility it states that "permissions are not enabled" on my firewire drive unilke on my internal drive that has permissions enabled. How do I enable permissions on my external drive. I've checked under get info on the external drive and I have read/write access.

You can only repair permissions on a volume with os x installed on it.
