What happened to my firewire????

My Lacie external drive that has worked beautifully for a about a year randomly started transferring files at about 1 MB/s!!! same cable and everything. Is the problem my Powerbook? I tried restarting, but that didnt help. This sucks. Any help is MUCH appreciated.
