My brother got himself an ibook g4 recently and wants to use his bass guitar w/ garage band, however, there is no sound/mic port. i went to the apple store and they suggested the iMic to bring sound in over usb, however, they said that it would need a pre-amp first or it will be too quiet. does anyone know the cheapest way of doing this, short of getting an imic and plugging his ibook directly into his amp?

Garageband has software amplification, you won't need any preamps to get a full amplified signal. All you'll need is hte iMic, a 1/4"->1/8" converter and garageband.

bass player eh? me too 8)

I use Griffin's iMic for audio in on my 800Mhz G4 iMac. I did have a real problem with the signal being too low but I got round this just by going to the sound control in system pref's and boosting the input volume to Max. It works fine now.

which you should be doing anyway(boosting input jack to max) when recording.(so that you can control all the levels in the recording software.

thank you very much guys, the guy at the apple store was saying that in order to do what he wanted, he'd have to buy a 200$ box that had 50 ports he didnt need.
