Apple Mail message highlighting seems "stuck", how to fix?

I've been thinking about using Apple Mail for some of my email uses, but I've got a strange problem, after going back to the program. I use the Rules feature to highlight messages from certain friends and family members. I also, for some reason, used to use it to highlight mail that went to a certain account.

I don't want it to put a purple highlight behind mail to that account anymore, though, so I removed that rule. But mail continues to highlight those messages. In fact, any changes I make to the rules (moving a friend from one ihghlight color to another) are not "taken" by Mail. Even if I delete all the rules, the color highlightings remain.

I threw out the com.apple.mail.plist file in ~/Library/Preferences, but the problem persists.

Has anyone seen anything like this before? Any suggestions on how to deal with it?

Mail doesn't remove highlighting. I ended up copying the files to my inbox after editing the rule and running the filter again.

I don't understand, there's no way to get rid of it? How do I "copy my files back into the Inbox" and whta filter is it that I rerun?

Select all messages you want the new rules to affect and choose from the menu bar...

    Message > Apply Rules
