Method of Backup network communication...?

I'm having a problem with Apple's Backup software. I'm wondering if anyone knows how Backup communicates with the .Mac servers.
Basically, when Backup does a "Backup to iDisk" back up, it fails and breaks my ADSL network connection, requiring me to reinitiate it. But, if I do a "Backup to Drive" back up and use my iDisk as a drive, it works fine.
Does anyone know the network communication methodology difference between a "Backup to iDisk" and "Backup to Drive" back up?
Conversely, do you know how I could view the network communication to glean details and discover the difference?
