Mplayer problems in Panther

I cannot watch movies on full screen using mplayer, infact modifying the window size of Mplayer leads to a blank/black screen window. I am using an old CRT monitor 1024x768 @ 60HZ. I am able to play movies on full screen in VLC and QuickTime only Mplayer is giving me problems. Your advice is appreciated.
