What to buy?! Torn between 20 or 40GB iPod!!

I've been wanting to buy an iPod for months now and I can't decide if I want to get the 20GB or spend the little more and go for the 40GB. All the music in my library is at the least 192K, and anything I rip off CD is done at 320K. I prefer the higher quality sound, although it makes for larger files.



Currently I have about 1985 songs whick take up about 14.57GB. Obviously, this library will only continue to grow. I plan to transfer songs onto the iPod at good quality, I don't like 128K. What makes more sense? 20 or 40GB? I need suggesstions, because I don't know how fast these things fill.

    I'd really go for the 40 gig model. In addition to the doubling of space, you also get approximately $75 of accessories (inline remote, dock, etc.)



    Plus, even if you don't use all 40 gigs for music, the iPod makes clean-installing/file transfer REALLY EASY. When you have 20 gigs of files to transfer to a new machine, it's really nice to use the iPod instead of burning 4 or 5 DVDs (and even better against 25+ CD-Rs)

    I'd go for the 40GB or consider using AAC and a lower bitrate. There really isn't a good reason not to use AAC anymore IMO.

    Is the 40GB model that much thicker than the 20GB model (the new Click Wheel model)?

    I would get the 40GB.



    The 40GB comes with the dock which is an option ($39) on the 20GB.

    The 40 is 0.12 inches thicker and 0.6 ounces heavier than the 20.

    The only reason I got the 20 GB is because I don't have enough music or need for a 40 GB iPod, and I didn't want to spend $369. I got my 20 GB for $269 ($285.18 with tax--education order) and I only have 950 songs right now, but it does take up about 5 GB's. I'll have more than enough room for the time being and into the future.

    I'd say the 40GB is a no brainer if you have the dough. It comes with the dock and TWICE the capacity. If money is tight, the 20GB is a nice unit too, and 20GB of music is way more than most people need to carry around with them anyway.

    I'm pining away over the 20 gig. I'm trying to get it for free with my freeipods membership thingy (see sig). The 40 gig just seems too expensive for something you carry around in your pocket. I would hate to drop it at the gym, or have it stolen

    I think the 20 gig is still a good day, and it is thinner than the 40 gig model!



    Plus, all you get extra on the 40 gig is the dock. So, if you *really* don't need the extra 20 gigs, I think the 20 gig choice is decent. That is what I did (shipped today). That is not something I regret. I sometimes regret getting the ibook over the Powerbook, but I don't regret getting the 20 gig ipod over the 40.

    Seriously, go with the 40 gig. The dock does rock and after buying the 20 and adding the $39 bucks and whatever tax and shipping go with it, you're only about 50 bucks away from an ipod that has twice the capacity. Even if you don't need the storage, it's much more bang for your buck, and you can wow your audiophile friends by ripping your music at a higher bitrate.



    Mmmmmm...bitrate.

    128kbps doesn't sound very well

    ordered a 40GB because of that.

    are you serious with that post? youre sounding a little sarcastic there. im going to try to go out to the apple store today to see just how much bigger the 40 is over the 20. If I'm a student at a Cal State, I can get a discount right? And I got one of those Simon gift cards for $80, could I use that too? It has a Visa logo, and is apparently good anywhere. I can't see Apple rejecting it, it's Visa and has $80 on it. With that, and the Education discount maybe I could take about $100 off the price of an iPod?

    An $80 certificate plus the $30 discount would make it a $110 discount on the iPod.

    A relative works in a simon mall so here is what I know:



    If the apple store is on a simon property, it will work, if not - find a comp usa that is on simon property. the visa logo doesnt mean a hill of beans.



    I frankley think gift cards/certificates are the biggest scam going, I would rather have 50$ than a $50 best buy, Simon, or even iTunes gift, My theory is, if you want to give me money, then give me MONEY.



    And why can't gift cards be redeemed for their cash value, If I have a receipt, why does the return policy not apply?

    20GB is more than enough for your needs, and then rip at 160 AAC, you then can have over 3000 songs(if you have them) that sound pretty good.

    Even more than 3000, I'm guessing. I rip at 192 AAC and have room for more than 3000 songs on my 15 gig 3G.

    Just break it down to dollars per GB. The 20GB at $300 is $15/GB. The 40GB at $400 is $10/GB. It just makes more sense to go with the 40GB.

    I finally got my 20GB 4G iPod today. I was put off by the 40GB's added thickness and weight and decided I really didn't need all that space. I wanted the thinner profile and lightness of the 20GB.

    I did the same. The 40 was a bit thicker and not as sleek. Didn't seem like much of an upgrade in form-factor. My new 20 is beautifully designed and very minimal.

    The new price-point should definitely push these things through the roof.

    Would like to have been given a dock though.
