Hmm... a potential path for the iPod evolution is to have wireless internet access so that users can download music directly to the iPod without a computer?

The iPod can access the ITMS without a computer, by itself, so people can shop for music just with an iPod? The iPod could then have an actual use for a color screen, viewing album covers and other music marketing items.

Has this topic been discussed already on AI?

Looking at the new generation iPod it is clearly about increasing hard drive capacity and reducing overall size. The demand for iPod mini shows the importance of size reduction and I think Apple is going to continue with what is successful.

They didn't have enough iPod minis, that's why they seem to be very popular. I think the mini's success has more to do with the price tag, the colors, the new design (all metal enclosure), the coolness factor and that it's a novely rather than the small size. A white iPod is as portable as a mini. Put them side by side and they're not that hard to slip into a pocket. They just didn't make enough of them and now it seems like they're more popular than sliced bread.

An iPod Max that's a bit larger than current iPods isn't a no-no for Apple. Could be done, could happen.

    agreed, 100%

    it's the "gift market" thing.

"my daughter wants an iPod -- what's the cheapest one?"

    yikes! untrue!

i have both, and lemme tell you the mini is SO MUCH more portable.

the mini is *significantly* lighter than the white one -- and that is where it's portability comes into play.

the mini so way easier to jog with. it has a wonderful "clip on" belt clip, and the mini is so light that it can hang on anything.

the white one feels like a monstah in my pocket (hehe) compared to the mini

There should be a CD Deck that can rip and import CDs directly to your iPod...that'd be kind of neat.

Again, it would need internet access to connect to the CDDB, or else you're gonna have a lot of songs named Track 1, etc.

Well, iTunes kinda does that. Not to sound like a smartass, but it's pretty much what it does, just easier and with song names and all.

This sounds interesting but I don't see how it would be feasible. First of all, it completely bypasses the Mac as the digital hub. This doesn't fit with Apple's strategy.

Then there's usability. The iPod is great for perusing large lists of songs, but I don't see how you could effectively use it for an online music store. The tiny screen would make it difficult to see enough information, let alone select it, skim it, search it. All from a touch-wheel? It'd be worse than going online with your cell phone.

Lastly, there's cost and practicality. What is wrong with using iTunes to get music? I don't think there's enough of a shortage of Macs or PCs that can't use iTMS to justify making the iPod an independent device. iTunes is simply the best method of buying, categorizing, managing music and there's no way Apple could cram all that functionality into an iPod effectively. The iPod is expensive as it is, I don't think there needs to be a wireless adapter jammed in there to jack up the price, along with a color screen, more buttons, etc.

I agree with Mr. Berber. Have you handled both of these side by side? When I saw them at MWSF I was really struck by how light the iPod mini is. It just seems to float in your hand. It is quite a different experience. I think this is why the pundits got it so wrong about iPod mini popularity. They just looked at the specs, they didn't factor in the experience.

    I stand corrected. Besides:

The white iPod takes up 5.6 cubic inches.

iPod mini takes up only 3.6 cubic inches.

The mini is like 35% smaller than the white iPod. Much smaller.
