Longhorn support for HD-DVD

Quote:

An executive at Microsoft's Japanese unit said at a briefing on HD DVD technology that it was not yet decided whether Longhorn, the next version of Windows, would support the rival Blu-ray technology from a consortium of companies, including Sony Corp

Not suprising since HD-DVD supports MS' own VC-9 codec. I see this as more of a play to "urge" Sony to support VC-9 in Blu Ray as the second codec to MPEG2

I know what this really is. It's not about MS letting us know about OS functionality that won't be delivered until 2 years from now. This is Microsoft at its best.

Fact #1- Sony is facing an uphill battle to get Blu Ray entrenched as a possible nextgen HDTV format.

Fact #2- Blu Ray only support MPEG2 TS right now. This means despite the 20GB advantage Blu Ray offers over HD-DVD in capacity that yields no extra playback/recording time due to the inefficiencies of MPEG2 compared to AVC or VC-9.

There's your anwer for why MS has made this statement folks. They are leveraging Longhorn to "woo" Sony into choosing VC-9 as a secondary codec. Basically MS is telling Sony "Support our format or we'll make it look like Blu Ray doesn't have the support of the largest computing platform on Earth"

This is big folks. This isn't about Longhorn, it's about making sure that if/when Sony chooses one of the new generation codecs(AVC and VC-9) that it's Microsoft's VC-9.

With VC-9 established in both HD-DVD and Blu Ray Microsoft can be more influential in our DRM works in the context of Operating Systems. They created VC-9 thus they have the inside track on utilizing it best.
