This link sends you to a HD version of the new theatrical Halo 2 trailer in wmv format. I have a Dual 1Ghz DDR with a Gig of RAM and a GF4Ti, I can't run this trailer at all, it loads up, but the fps is extremely low, I'm not even talking 1fps, it updates about 10 times over the 30 second period.

To my knowledge only WMP9 can play WMV files, at least on the mac. My question is, is it the hardware that is limiting playback of this trailer or is it WMP9? My feeling is that it's a little bit of both, afterall the iMac rev.a I had couldn't play back "Large" size movie trailers from apple.com at 25fps, more like 8fps. Can any of you guys run it?

From the lower res version of this trailer Halo 2 looks as though it's going to look pretty good.

Downloading it right now. As far as WMP being the only program to play WMV's, I think Mplayer will play some select files as well, but correct me if I am wrong.

    K. Downloaded it and opened in WMplayer. Same problem you described, and it will not open with Mplayer. Strange.

What spec peecee does it expect? Anybody successfully run it on Win?

Might be one of the windows only codecs built into WMP9.

I was going to test it on a freinds PC, an Athlon 3200 sysem with a Radeon 9800 pro, but he's gone on holiday.

If it was a windows specific codec, wouldn't it not be able to play at all on mac? I wonder if anyone with a G5 can play this thing.

In WMP 8 under XP it plays at full framerate but the video quality is horrible. This is with a 2.5 GHz P4.

Downloaded WMP 9 and it looks beautiful but skips about every other frame.

OK, I guess this PC is using the motherboard graphics (Intel 82865G) but my thinking is a P4 or G5 would be the minimum for full-quality playback.

Oh, and I can't wait for this game.

    Dual 2 Ghz:

Window itty-bitty small and it still choppy using VERY little processor power.

Are you sure this is a good file? It says the bitrate is 10Mbps yet the file is only 50MB?

BTW, I still have my CPU monitor from OS 10.2.9 so it is easy to see. 8) Most of the time I'm not using half CPU power.

EDIT: Just saw what it was supposed to be like. Yea, something is flipped out and I think it is the Windows Media Player application.

So basically nothing can play this thing? That's ridiculous, I thought it would be the mac version of WMP9 not being efficient, but it seems that not even windows users can play it properly.

I'm beginning to think only a 3.4Ghz P4 Prescott or above can play this thing, those chips are supposed to have exceptional WMP decoding speeds.

Upgraded to 1.25 GB of ram in the Toshiba and I can basically play it now. Some scenes are choppy, so it isn't completely smooth.

Going to try on my Athlon XP system Sunday when one of my new monitors arrive.

I played it on a friend's 3200 Athlon which had 1.5GB DDR400 and a Radeon 9800 pro, it played fine, but another friend's Dual Athlon 2400, 2GB RAM with nVidia Quaddro FX3000 thingy couldn't even play it completely smooth... Bit ridiculous if you ask me.

Just use the QT version that Ebby included in his post. I'm sure that QT is optimized well enough for the Mac platform.
