Really good deal on new Macs
Let it be said that I hate CompUSA but they have a pretty good trade in deal
Trade in values:
Apple Desktops
? PowerPC G3 $100
? PowerPC G4 $500
? iMac (any processor) $250
Apple Notebooks
? 166Mhz to 266Mhz $200
? 300Mhz to 400Mhz $300
? 500Mhz and higher $600
you can read about it here:

A dual 867 for $1200 is not bad at all. Much better than upgrading your old sawtooth.

Now that I think about it... What the H3ll is CompUSA thinking? We are not PC users. That is a fair trade for a PC with what they are worth, but Mac's don't loose as much value the second you buy one. Did they even bother to check and see what the resale value is on a PowerMac, PowerBook, iBook, or iMac?
You would be an idiot to bring in anything Mac related for that price.

I'd say if you have anything below a 733 it's a pretty good deal. Also, the fine print from the reader comments on that sight seem to indicate two things: you get an immediate credit card voucher, and then you must use that money to purchase a new system (right then). No leaving and coming back, etc.
I originally had no plans to upgrade to these things, but that Dual 867 for $1200 is pretty hard to pass up. Even the Dual Gig for around $2000 is pretty nice. Only question is, does CUSA have anything other than standard config machines? Can you get a dual gig without the SuperDrive for example?

at first I thought it was a good deal, but for the most part you can get a lot more money on eBay.
what is compusa going to do with all the old machines that people send in?

Hmm... that's a good question.
Depends on what you're selling, doesn't it? I mean for older machines (anything 550MHz and under), I doubt you'll get more than $500 unless you have a lot of extras - true?

You think you can't get more than $500 for things under 550MHz? That's crazy. Not too long ago 550MHz G4s were great.

EBaying them, or otherwise resaleing for enormous profit. Those prices are absolutly terrible deals. Outright awfull.

corporations can sell stuff on ebay?
Like I said, a SP 667 (or any dual) - or faster - and it's clearly a better idea to go EBay. Otherwise CUSA's deal isn't that bad. Maybe you could squeeze an extra $80 or $100 out for a power Mac with certain specs, but by and large you wouldn't get much more money - just a lot more hassle (shipping, seller fees, etc.).
It would be a good idea for really old iMac owners. $250 for a 700 MHz iMac is no good, but $250 for a Bondi one is great.
Do they check to make sure it boots up with what you've given them? Couldn't you theoretically put, say, a spare 500MB hard drive on it and install a basic OS, keeping the larger stock HD for yourself? *evil grin* or you could leave in only enough RAM to boot up, and not even include an optical drive nevermind, I shouldn't be mean.

WhoTF is their webmaster and what is he/she smoking? It should be a banned substance - even reefer doesn't make you that dumb.

$250 for a rev a iMac is actually only okay - that is roughly what they are selling for on ebay (more, if you have added ram etc).

I haven't looked into it at all, but I thought I would be lucky to get $250 for my Rev.A iMac, even though I've boosted the RAM to 192MB, have installed a Griffin iPort (so that you can connect an ADB printer or other peripheral and an external monitor) and still have the original box and manuals.
If only CompUSA took the trade-in on an LCD G4 iMac too. Then I'd be all over this trade-in offer. It's still worth considering if you'd rather not deal over eBay.

I guess the only smart thing to do is call the store you'd go to, and see if they know what you're talking about. If they say "uhh, no - we haven't heard of that" the headaches required to get them to go along with it would be monumental.
And of course there's the $82,000 OS X.2 upgrade CD.

hmm didn't see the 82,000 but they are charging 199.00 for it. that's insane
