User Switching Memory Issue

Can someone tell me the requirements for succesful use of Panther's Fast User Switching. I've got a 17"iMac with 768MB RAM and 1Ghz G4, and I've finally confirmed that the problem I've been dealing with (GUI not responding to mouse-clicks etc.) occurs when both users are logged in. The second user will intermitently experience complete 'freeze' of the GUI, not a crash, but unresponsiveness to mouse clicks, keyboard commands etc.

Presumably, this is the result of the Mac "choking" on the demands of the users? Any thoughts?

Heh... I'm using it successfully right now on my family's 600MHz G3 iMac with 256MB of RAM.

Of course, we ain't doin' nothin much, but I have found Panther to be surprisingly responsive for what we do throw at it.
