does the ppp authentication go through ok?

what do you see in the network>modem>tcpip pref pane when connected?

annoyingly enuff it appears to be fine:

using th modem (not airport) tells me i'm connected to 218.101.58.67 at 50667bps, IP address is 218.101.96.225.

    network/modem/prefpane/TCP/IP says:

    Configure IPv4: Using PPP

    IP address: 218.101.96.225

    Subnet Mask: (blank)

    Router: 218.101.58.67

    (blank fields below that)

    thanx for yr assist

If you are using PPP over a modem, the network pane shouldn't say anything. Remove the data from the preferences pane. Just create a connection and choose to configure IP4 using PPP. It should work.

You might want to try connecting to a server using it's IP address to see if it is a nameserver issue. If that is the case, you are better off running your own domain nameserver on the Mac. There are articles on the Apple support forums on how to do that.

well... got my modem working now, on th net ok

i unplugged base station & turned Airport off, seemed my next net connect suddenly working correctly...

like Airport wasn't letting go properly? & unplugging phone line not enuff, but power off & Airport off did it.

will replug it & test next

wotta relief, Macs wot don't work i hate, PCs it's par for th course

    Airport working fine too

so th important thing was that turning off airport alone didn't fix it, unplugging base station alone didn't, but base station & airport off together did! restarting puter was no use either...

some kinda lingering idea of th system's that airport was connected when it wasn't seemed to prevent access despite a new connection being made...?

thanx for help insiders, i'm at Latitude 43 degrees Sth, not too many xperts...

I have no idea where the problem is but a few times a year we find that the network gets stuck. The solution is to turn everything off for thirty seconds or so and then restart them all. I have everything (router, switcher, AEBS) on one power strip so it is easy to reset this way.
