The new g4 and switch
I just had a thought(and wow! is my head sore
the new powermac has impressive numbers and specs...I was literally drooling when I first saw them on apple.com (since I was away in Ireland for 2 weeks I missed the initial release, and was surprised to see it there when I got back)
now it turns out that the new powermacs aren't as robust as the specs suggest(there have been a few articles about the meager speed gains, and general oddities in the systems)
could the new powermac line-up be designed more with catching the eye of pc users and getting them to switch?
I know what your thinking "thats the iMacs job"
but the iMac isn't the most powerful on the block...and the powermac certainly has a better reputation when it comes to power(as hard as this may be to believe, almost everyone I meet, pc users or mac users seem to think that the powermac g4 represents awesome raw power...its a weird phenomenom but fairly consistant)
it is possible that apple released these new powermacs less with the intention of satisfying the mac-heads
and more with the intentions of having better numbers with which to attract more would-be converts.
any thoughts on this?
I'm not saying that this upgrade is a minor one that will be replaced in a month...but I am suggesting that this could be a dumb upgrade that isn't really worth it.
at anyrate I will probably own a dual 867 within the next few months....my iMac DVSE is nearing the end of its term for me(almost 3 years now)

So basically, I think Apple just said "It's better than nothing" and made it happen. Apple is still waiting for IBM to fnish up their new Power 4-based chips... when that happens, I think we'll see some drastically improved towers.
Did I mention I ordered a new dual 1 GHz w/GeForce 4 Ti last week?
problem with series improvements in the powermac line(intense mhz uppings, new processes, gizmos, and what nots)is then Apple risks leaving their other systems in the dust...true the powermac is supposed to be pro power, and should be allowed to branch way out from the other products....but we've never really had that...and the iBook is still g3...and the powerbook may need to be redesigned to incorperate a mega ibm power 4 derived monstrosity(I pray this won't happen, cause the powerbook is genius) whatever happens, I'll have a new tower in a few months(probably) and then I won't care cause I'll be set for at least 4 years anyway
I want to see a g4 iBook...cause I'm getting very temtped to buy a laptop and cannot afford a powerbook.
Ireland was great....hey I'll give you a call sometime in the next week or so, we should chill sometime.
your getting a dual ghz with geforce 4 -DAMN YOU THALAZAR!- thats really sweet.
as for me I'm getting increasingly frustrated with warcraft 3s poor performance on my system, and even though I'm nearing the end of the game(just a few more missions) its getting unbearable.
we're thinking about getting a buff gpu and some more ram for our pc to increase its gaming powers...but maybe not, that thing is a crap factory anyways.
