Today i'm a happy Man!

Well there is alot of people out there saying the G4 is slow and in a way it is when you do the same thing on a PC and that PC is going at 3Ghz+, but let me tell you OS 10.2 and this dual mac work best at what I, yes I want to do with MY computer.

I moved up from a 7300/180 604e PowerMac to this new Dual PowerMac 867Mhz. And i know i will be useing this thing for 5 more years to come just like my 7300/180. That old mac is still working and my bro still burns music CD's on it most of the time and does his homework on it too.....LET's see someone in the PC world do that with there 5 year old computer!

But back to this my new Dual PM (am i makeing this clear? )

It is loud, but at the same time i don't mind it. It's not like after useing it for 2,3 or 4 hours you can't stand it any longer and must get out of the room like some have posted. Its just another sound that is in the background of life

But it's not BAD it just there...in the end people...it all up to your selfs if you find it LOUD or not like me.

IS it fast with OS 10.2 HELL yeah! same money 5 months ago would have gotten you WAY less with what you get here people...DUAL and OS X are the WAY TO GO!

    P-p-P-p-P-p-P-p-Please! PLEASE!

Tell more ! I'm about to buy that configuration (dual 867 MHz).

How much ram do you have in it ? What options? What video card ?

Describe Jaguar's speed and compare it to 10.1.5.

    T-t-T-t-T-t-Thanks !

I only have the 'old' Dual GHz SlowSilver(tm) but I think I am "qualifed" to tell you the difference between 10.2 and 10.1

    In 10.2:

Windows minimizing is much smooooooooother and quicker

App lanuch is faster, relaunch is MUCH faster. (eg. InDesign 2. Under 10.1-----14 bounces first launch and 8 bounces second launch. In 10.2 it's 7 bounces and 2 bounces!)

Rendering in AfterEffects is slightly faster......5% something

However...the current "Final" of 10.2 is somewhat buggy. Wake from sleep causes instant Kernel Panic

Photoshop 7 runs kind of funny under 10.2. If leave it idle on background for over 20 minutes it will quit by itself.

A lots of preference files have to be trashed in order to make some apps work properly.....

That's what I can think of at this moment

    Thanks for the reply.

Can you clear up this thing for me, please ?

In 10.1.5, lets say (it's an example) I have a large window in the Finder with many icons : folders, files, etc (in Icon view). The window is a bit too big for nothing, with lots of useless white space. I click on the resize button (the green one) to make the window smaller. Well, sadly, it doesn't work properly. Sometimes it gives a too small window with cursors showing on the sides. I can resize the window "by hand" to show all the files without any useless white space, but it's annoying to have done it "by hand". In short, the resize button doesn't appears to work properly in 10.1.5. How is it in Jaguar ?

Oups! This is off topic. Sorry.

Well Kali this has everything you get with a 867Mhz system with the only thing added being 512MB of more ram on top of the 256MB it comes with...and let me tell you that should be all you need...OS X does a good job of the RAM and this things flys with os x .2 on it and this much ram.

The N4 MX card is fast as is going to cost you less BUGS in the time to come....the other card for these macs crashs after wakeing up from sleep...no such thing with this card or mac.....i have went to sleep and waken up no probs....get it you will love it!

Need to ask anything else? go right ahead.

There are only few things I care before buying :

The dual drive bay. Can I put any kind of drive in the second bay ? I'm interested to put a MO (Magneto-Optical) drive there, which IMHO is the best archive-backup device. I currently use an old APS MO drive next to my old Mac, which reads and writes on small 3.5" floppies of 230 MB. It's almost as fast as an HD, it's very robust and it's the safer archiving medium.

I'm concerned about the noise level of the new duals. The machine I'll buy will be sitting on my desk at home, not very far away from my bed. There is a Mac IIci there (heavily upgraded with a Daysar accelerator, etc...) and two APS peripherals (MO and CD). The noise of this settup is very satisfying. How do you think the dual 867 MHz will compare ?

You want to see how fast it is?

I used SnapzPro to capture me launching 10 apps at the same time. Keep in mind I turned off some of the splash screens so you won't see them on the screen but they do appear in the Dock (Graphic Converter, Clock, etc...

I'm running a Dual 867 sotck (256MB of RAM) in this video. I'm about to throw in another 256 for the time being (I'll upgrade to 1GB later).

    You can download the video from :<a href="http://homepage.mac.com/testpagesystems/FileSharing2.html"; target="_blank">http://homepage.mac.com/testpagesystems/FileSharing2.html</a>;

I saved it as an MPEG-4 so you'll need QuickTime 6 to see it.

P.S. Go and get this machine, you'll cream your shorts.

I too am on QT 5 because it's PRO and I don't want to go to QT 6 PRO until it is bundled that way with FCP 3.0.2. So would you please just tell us how many seconds that launch took?

How much it takes to launch just the SystemPanel, after boot, on the 867 MHz ?

I've found this very slow on the emac, imacs, and even on the 933 MHz.

    It should be instantaneous.

    Hi,

System Prefs takes 1 second on my Dual 867.

    Graphic Converter 2 seconds.

    iTunes, 2 seconds

    PhotoShop 7, 8 seconds

These are all second launch times.
