Hi,

I've been planning for a while to switch from my Windows PC to an Apple, and now that the iBook G4 has come along, it seems to be a near perfect computer for me. My first question is regarding using the 14? iBook as a desktop replacement. Has anyone tried this? 14? does seem a little small, so I've look into buying a 17? Apple monitor as well. From reading the tech specs on Apple's website that the iBook has a VGA output, so connecting an external monitor wouldn't be very difficult, or am I wrong? It would be nice to be able to have a portable computer to take with me, but also have a large enough workspace at home to play games on, work with Photo shop, etc. Any and all advice is greatly appreciated. Thanks

Hi, iBook is a very capable laptop, but for a desktop replacement the screen resolution is too small. Even if you're using it with an external monitor, the maximum resolution will be limited to 1024x768 and with that 17" monitor it means that the image will be a little soft as the 17" has a native resolution of 1280 by 1024 pixels. The display scales down that 1024x768 resolution of the iBook and it looks bad. If you can afford it, 12" and 15" (and 17", but that's probably out of your price range anyway) PowerBooks can handle higher resolutions with external monitors.
