I bought the iMac used myself so I don't have the original CD's. Any OS 8.6 CD and up will do just fine to clean install on the drive. Currently it's sporting a clean install of 9.2.2
The Hard drives can be upgraded. Internally it's just a regular ATA connection so any IDE Hard drive should do. There may be some maximum limitation, but I'm unaware of one. I know that it can handle at least a 20 gig because at one point that's what I had in it.
Officially the maximum RAM is 256 MB, but that's not necessarily the case. I've read of people putting more than that in. I think that that was just the biggest DIMMs that were available when it came out. The RAM isn't as easy to get to as it is in later iMacs. The bottom "guts" of the computer must be pulled out. Here is a guide to the process that should help. I was too lazy to read through it, but the pictures are good... lol. You can see how to get to the hard disk as well.
