Any success/problems with Priceline.com?

Trying to get cheap and decent hotel accommodations for New York and wondered if Priceline.com was the way to go.

Looks like there are potential bargins to be had, but I'm concerned over if their 3 and 4 star ratings are truly that. Any experiences with Priceline here?

    My family has booked a lot of airline tickets with priceline with no problems, but I don't know about their hotel ratings.
