Analysts fear longer than expected G5 delays

Nobody believed me when I originally said that it was starting to look like motorola all over again a few months ago.

I'm not saying it exactly the same thing for the next 4 years, but WTF? This is staring to bother the crap out of me.

    Its funny now but everyone thought I was crazy when I stated that the G5 (970) was a bit of a performance joke. Here we have a processor that can barely reach 2 GHz and it still runs hotter than hell. At slower speeds it barely makes a statement relative to the G4. But everyone took Appl'e/IBM's bait hook line and sinker.



    The number one thing that should have grabbed everybody on the day that the G5 was released is the overwhelming heat out put of the processor. That right there should have demonstrated to everybody where the processor was going. The heat output is a fundamental problem with this processor, one should take great interest in what AMD has done with its line of processors running in the same GHz range. In that context the 970 simply looks like technology suitable for a previous generation.



    It is kind of funny but Freescale may very well be in a postion soon to save Apple's core Or at the very least be the core of any portable likely to come from the west coast.



    My fundamental problem is that I may soon be in the market for a new Mac. Due to the rather backwards nature of the latest rumored hardware releases it will be rather hard to spend money on iMac3 and I'm not so flush that a Powermac is doable. Of course we can all hope that the rumored specs are simply wrong and that Apple has gotten over the need to sell grossly over priced yesteryear hardware.

    Dave     [/QUOTE I dont think freescale/moto at 1.6 is going to be rescuing anyone and iam bothered big time from what i see about heat problems from this chip vs Amds stuff. i am a hairs away from canceling my 2.5 and getting a high end AMD machine.maybe a 3500 or 3800. i only need the power for gaming and on the pc side is where they are. This is bad news for Apple. the whole Powermac,Xserve,iMac strategy was dependent on this chip.

    Although if it was on X86 we could get SLI sooo much faster than we will on the Mac, and even PCIe, and a slew of machines to put it on. I think I would still get that Alienware I liked once there was an Nvidia SLI motherboard for Opterons.



    This is the first time ever that I have agreed that OS X on x86 would be a good thing. Maybe not for Apple's hardware model, but it would be great for Apple Software division, and the consumer.

    I'm glad this statement comes from analysts and not someone who "really" knows what is going on.



    Intel just recently delayed the 4Ghz pentium until 2005. IBM and Intel seek the bleeding edge so it's only natural they get cut every now and then.



    2004 has been a strange year so far on the hardware front. I'm certainly hope 2005 is much easier. I think IBM has to be red in the face over these issues. Then again Eweek had an article where a guy literally said IBM runs the wildest fab he had seen in Fishkill. Maybe some of those "cleanroom" issues he mentioned are coming back to haunt Big Blue.



    All eyes will be on Moto and AMD now to see how far they get.

    Well... without the 6800, you can get a 1.8 or 2.0GHz G5 shipped in 3-5 days. The 2.5s are delayed, but I don't see how that would affect the iMac.

    Kickaha and Amorph couldn't moderate themselves out of a paper bag. Abdicate responsibility and succumb to idiocy. Two years of letting a member make personal attacks against others, then stepping aside when someone won't put up with it. Not only that but go ahead and shut down my posting priviledges but not the one making the attacks. Not even the common decency to abide by their warning (afer three days of absorbing personal attacks with no mods in sight), just shut my posting down and then say it might happen later if a certian line is crossed. Bullshit flag is flying, I won't abide by lying and coddling of liars who go off-site, create accounts differing in a single letter from my handle with the express purpose to decieve and then claim here that I did it. Everyone be warned, kim kap sol is a lying, deceitful poster.



    Now I guess they should have banned me rather than just shut off posting priviledges, because kickaha and Amorph definitely aren't going to like being called to task when they thought they had it all ignored *cough* *cough* I mean under control. Just a couple o' tools.

    Freescale is to talking about a dual-core chip at the MPF'04.

    What do you think, when will Freecale to be able to sell this chip?
