New products from Apple soon?

I have been reading about Apple's new patents, which have been overwhelming lately. But this article really caught my attention, especially the part about the iPod. You have to read it.

I'll give it a read! Then I'll edit this.

Edit: Hmmm. Well Apple has been known to patent a lot of names and things that never saw the light of day, as I'm sure many other companies do.

Searchlight is supposed to be Spotlight. I remember some rumors about Apple releasing a MS Word alternative called Document. Sure, a little odd name, but maybe iWork could be a rebranding of that word processing app.

The POD thing, I just think they're protecting themselves against in case someone tries to name their devices in similar fasion as the iPod. If this is indeed a new product maybe it means future iPods could beam music to Airport Express stations.

I don't think they'll add AM/FM music to the iPod because if you can get free music from the airwaves, why would you bother purchasing from the iTMS?

I definitely think we see whatever ProBand is by MWSF. Its definitely a music related product. Could be announced very soon actually with MW Paris and AES Convention still to come.

iWork sounds like an accessory. POD I have no idea. Again Apple could be hedging its bets but I doubt that because they would still have a claim against someone using Pod because of the iPod trademark.

ProBand = Soundtrack which already exists and is currently bundled with FCP and is basically the "pro" version of GarageBand. So over all nothing new besides covering all the bases and keeping money from their hard work in their pockets.

Hmmmm seems we might have a 50/50 chance. Aug of 2003 Macrumors.com posted this

    http://www.macrumors.com/pages/2003/...14034831.shtml

Apple has filed for a new Trademark with the United States Patent and Trademark Office in August 2003.

The newest Trademark is "Garage Band", categorized under "computers, computer software, and computer peripherals; computers, computer software, and computer peripherals."

Apple still has a number of unused Trademarks. Most recently, they registered for a number of animal names -- including Lynx, Cougar, Leopard and Tiger, which could potentially be future OS codenames/releases. Other examples of unused Trademarked names include: Junkyard, XGrid, and Gigawire.

Keynote was first mentioned in a Trademark application in October 2002, and became a shipping product at MacWorld San Francisco 2003.

Xgrid of course is finally here. Gigawire still hasn't been used nor has Junkyard. Looking at the length involved between the tradmarking of "Keynote" and "Garageband" and their respective announce dates means that we either see an "iWork" or "ProBand" at MWSF. Something new is coming.

It's more like the other way around if anything! Garageband can do a lot of stuff that Soundtrack can't, but Soundtrack can't do anything that Garageband can't do also.

Apple made it pretty clear that Garageband is for the amateur ( just look at the name of the product GARAGEBAND) ProBand is so obviously the "professional band".

Can't wait for this to happen. All this would explain why Apple bought one of the worst interfaces ever made (Logic) and then never really changed it into the "Apple way". They have been working on "Proband" all along. Like when they bought that video editing software (can't remember what it was) and then came out with Final Cut Pro. Same method.

Wonder if Logic will still excist, but I'm sure we won't care once we have all seen "Proband" !

There was a story that when showed a demo of Logic (when shopping around for a music company) Steve Jobs walked out in the middle of the presentation mumbling: "oh my God, it's awfull!". Logic was just that, what a perfect buy for a company who is a master in User Interface caouse isn't this what they could add to enhance the product?

Makes snece to me. They buy Emagic, out comes first Garageband (iMovie) then "Proband" (Final Cut Pro)

    ...can't wait !

    ProBand. I got it!

At Winter NAMM Apple demo'd 3 forthcoming apps.

    Sculpture- A modeling synth.

    Ultrabeat- Drum synth

    Guitar Amp- Guitar Amp simulation.

It makes sense that Apple will bundle these apps together into "ProBand" and sell it as an add on pack to Logic 7. Makes sense to me.

Ok so maybe ProBand is something different, but on the other hand Apple would be breaking their tradition of having Pro lines of software come out before a consumer version is available. Notably Final Cut Pro was before iMovie and DVD Studio Pro was before iDVD, it is also the same in the way they do their hardware. So if GarageBand is a consumer program the pro line of the product should be out which leads me to believe it is just Soundtrack. As for recoding isn't that what Logic is for.

Also I think it is better with two separate apps one for recoding and the other for loop based music creations, because Soundtrack is supposed to be an easy way for a video editor to put custom music to his film so he really doesn't want to pay for the recording part because he isn't going to use it. On the other hand if you are going to be recording you really don't need the features of a loop based music program. This is far different than consumer needs who can benefit from having it all rolled into one app because they probably aren't going to have a full band like a pro group so the accompaniment by the computer is helpful.

So the most coming out of ProBand that I see would be something equivalent to Final Cut Express and not Final Cut Pro. Something more powerful than GB but not enough to take on Logic/Soundtrack.

    Just my 2¢

    That would be too muddled.

    Midi/Recording=

    Logic Express and Logic- Prosumer

    Garageband- Consumer

    Soundtrack- Video Professional

There's no room for another app unless it's a high end app for Audio Post Production ala ProTools. Logic 7 isn't strong enough in audio editing for Post work. ProBand doesn't sound like a Post app at all. Somehow I doubt Apple is just going to toss in the three plugins I mentioned before into Logic 7. All three are easily worth $700 bundled. Sounds like a good opportunity to bundle them and sell them as an extra or create a Logic 7 ProBand edition with the plugins included.
