Strike me silly, but why would it ever be needed to shut down the Apple store? As tadunne said before, 'flicking a switch' should do the trick, no?
Apple probably does a final test run after moving the new site onto the production servers. If you are rolling out something new, you don't want your servers to choke or the sight to go down because you forgot to update all the code or a table or something.
That's my guess anyway.
I'd rather they take the time and do it right. I mean, we're talking an hour? Can you imagine what kind of traffic spikes their servers get when new hardware is released?

I have no idear, of the update. Apples store are down for more than an hour, it's not simple routine maintenance. But why US store are up ?

Well.... yeah
I'm thinking not updates tonight, just a software update for the euro stores. the euro stores always seem a bit more hacked together than the US one.
but we always have paris..
Guess they figure they can be without the euro sites for a while...
