Did the G1 and G2 processors ever existed? Were they marketed under those names?

Thanks for the history lesson.

    afaik, there were no processors named g1 and g2 prior to the g3.

    the g3s predecessors were called 604 and 604e.

    you might want to check apple-history for more details.

    G1 refers to the Motorola 68k series (68000, 68040, etc) of processors, and G2 would go to the 60x series (601, 603ev, etc). Really the "G" just means generation, there are several different processors in the G3 (750, 750cx, etc), G4 (7400, 7450, etc) and G5 (970, 970fx) families.

    I always thought that

    G1 = 601 (the first PowerPC)

    G2 = 603 and 604 families

    Also, the G4 is derived from the 603 branch of the family tree, with lots of stuff bolted on.

    G1 was the first generation of PowerPC, the 601. G2 was the 603 and 604 the subsequent 603e/604e. The PowerPC generation number wasn't used as a marketing term until the G3 (750) arrived.

    I've been seeing that alot recently too and I couldn't figure it out until just now reading this thread. It must stand for "as far as I know"! I feel smart.
