Fanless origional iMac.

I'm wondering if I can get away with disconnecting the fan on my origional Bondi iMac. (It's getting really loud with age.)

I know the fan was eliminated by Apple in subsequent models, but did they actually design a different cooling scheme ? ... or did they just realize the fan wasn't necessary ?

Has anyone done this ?

The slot-load iMac case was designed specifically to work with no fans.

I'd recommend against removing the fans from your tray-load.

Do not remove the fan , I think it's located above the processor which allows it to cool down a bit. the heat sink located in the processor is small.

I too would strongly recomend not to remove the fan. why not lube the fan a bit and tighten it to lower the noise.

the hard drive can also become noisy after their long years. check your hard drive to see if that is the source of the noise.

anyways, if you try it , let us know.

You could, however replace the fan, if it is the culprit.

Here is one source (Haven't used this source-just an example.)

Be careful if you take your machine apart. There is a very thin and fragile wire that goes somewhere important tha runs along the chassis, and you can easily crimp or sever it (I did while adding ram to my son's imac G3 233). I fixed the wire, but not after taking the dang thing apart and putting it back together umpteen times before I figured it out. (The insulation was not cut thru, but the wire was.)

    It's the fan...

This machine has been apart several times... sporting an 80 gig HD and CDRW now

I was thinking of setting it up as a server, but it's too noisy to have on all the time, as is. I may just pull the fan and see if it toasts. Worst case, I have to spend $80 on eBay to replace the computer

    I'll let you know.
