Hi, i was considering getting a powermac g5. apple claims that its a very quiet machine. i was just wondering how quiet it really is.

i read a review of sonys new machine on cnet.com and they said that its so quiet that they couldnt even tell if it was on or not. i was hoping for the powermac to be this quiet the way apple advertises it.

I'm not sure in DB levels (since I don't have a DB meter anymore) but my PowerMac G5 Dual 2.0Ghz Rev. B is much quieter then my iMac G4 800mhz with superdrive. I leave my G5 on at night most times and forget it's even there, unless all the fans kick in like it did last night and it's noisy enough to wake you up from a 3 hr sleep. But 99% of the time it's quiet, unless you are doing heavy crunching like Unreal Tournament 2004 or rendering which I do often. Hope that helps. So it's not really technical. Oh and it is quieter then the Dual G4 Sawtooth I use on campus occasionally.

I have a Rev. A. It is very quiet most of the time. However, when you do something that stresses it, you can definitely hear the fans gear up. How often that will happen depends on what you are doing and how warm your room is. For me, 99.99% of the time it is the quietest computer I ever used (quieter than the cubes, which I found had fairly load HDs), but that other .01% of the time it can be the loudest.
