My first time here. SAeems like an excellent board...

(1) Which is a faster machine and will handle OSX better G4 Tower 466 or an Imac G3 600 ? Both have about 512 of ram.

(2) One of the Macs in our call center is an older slot loading Imac. Someone stuck one of those small CDs in there and it will not eject or even be recognized by the machine or OS. How do you get it out?

Thanks, Mitch

ok not sure about which one is faster should be around the same in osx

About the cd stuck in the drive. On the right of the cd slot theres a small pin hole, push a paper clip, hair clip or pin in there and the iMac should try to eject the disk

I tried the pin hole thing but because it is one of those really small demo CDs it won't spit it out.

ouch, that is a tough one. you could try booting into open firmware (hole command + option + o while booting) and then type "eject cd" at the prompt (without the ")

I will try booting into firmware. If not, can I take the cover off or something?

    Thanks, Mitch

Have you tried restarting while holding down the mouse button until it ejects?

Not clear if you're running OS X but Help says:

Use Open Firmware to eject the disc if all other methods fail (this may not work on all computers). To use this method, you have to start up and briefly use the computer using Open Firmware, not the standard Mac OS X desktop. This is a simple procedure-try it if you're feeling adventurous.

To eject a disc using Open Firmware:

    1. Restart the computer.

    2. When you hear the startup sound, press and hold the Command-Option-O-F keys. (The Command key has an Apple on it.)

    3. Release the keys when you see a white screen that says "Welcome to Open Firmware."

    4. At the prompt, type:

    eject cd

    5. Press Return, then wait a few seconds. The disc drive should eject the disc, and "ok" appears on the screen when the action is complete.

    6. Type:

    mac-boot

    7. Press Return.

Your computer starts up normally and you see the familiar Mac OS X desktop.

I've never done this with OS X. Please note Apple's chirpy little warning in bold. To paraphrase, "It's as easy as falling off a log but if something goes horribly wrong don't say we didn't warn you." Make of that what you will. If I was in your situation and had exhausted other options, I'd be up for a bit of adventure.

    Needlenose pliers.

As for the speed question, the G4 has a much better floating point unit than the G3, but what will really make the difference in this case is the amount of RAM you have and the potential from running Quartz extreme. OSX still runs pretty well on a G4/500 with 512MB of RAM and no QuartzExtreme. I would assume the performance on the systems you mentioned would be similar to that.

I have needlenose but they won't fit in the slot. What is Quartz extreme?

My guess for the drive is breaking it open. Obviously hte smaller sized CD will not be seated correctly meaning the eject mechanism can not do its job. I also wonder if it might break the player if there is something where it shouldn't be when ejecting.

I would be calling the experts, or a computer repair center who may give you an answer without trying to charge you for it, to see what they think.

It might be cheaper to buy an external player instead.
