Any idea why OS X keeps the screensaver preferences here:

/Users/<user_name>/Library/Preferences/ByHost/com.apple.screensaver.<MAC address>.plist

Why the "ByHost" sub directory?

Any idea why the plist has to have a unique MAC address as an identifier in the .plist's name?

Perhaps the .Mac Screensaver? Not sure why it would need your MAC address, however.

Mac OS X's defaults system (ie: preferences) is keyed by user, application, and host. If your computer lacks a hostname, the MAC address is used.
