I think my buddy has convinced me.

He has been trying to convince me to buy a mac for the longest time now :P

I think he has finally won -- those 17 inch powerbooks are nice and juicy...not to mention that a powerful laptop would be particularly useful to me here at college (I'm a mass communications major.)

I'm pretty sure I am doing the following:

http://store.apple.com/1-800-780-500.../2.0.9.1.0.6.3

What I am debating over right now: I currently have a Gen2 ipod. Personally, I'm not too huge on the Gen4 design (I like Gen3). Thing is, if I get a gen4, i can take advantage of the 200 dollar rebate, sell my old ipod for 200, and essentially get a free ipod. Is it worth it?

Thanks in advance, I'm sure I'll have more questions in the coming days :P

We all know that you can't link custom Applestore configurations. .

If the new iPod has a larger capacity, go for it! Otherwise, keep your old one. Actually, scratch that, just get a new one. The new ones grow on you after a while.

That's the thing: From what I've seen and heard, Gen3 is superior. I've used a gen3 (a friend has one) and I like it. But I've heard the buttons on the gen4 are a bit screwy after a bit :/

    Decisions!!

You should wait until PowerBooks get G5 processors (January). Any machine with a G4 processor, especially one that is well over $2000, is not worth buying.

Just how big is the difference in a G4 and a G5? How will that affect battery life? How much will a similar laptop cost on release with a G5?

    1. A huge difference. The G4 is not only a very primitive(slow) processor, it is choked by slow system bus speeds that cannot utilize DDR memory. The current PowerBooks' bus runs at a pitiful 167MHz (versus 400MHz effective for Centrino laptops and even high for Pentium 4 based machines). The PowerBook, in terms of computational power, isn't even in the same league as its Centrino counterparts. The G5 should fix that somewhat, though it will still trail behind (Dothan has more cache, shorter pipelines, and stronger functional units).

    2. Battery life should be similar to current PowerBooks (2-3.5 hours).

    3. It should be similarly priced.

That's assuming a G5 PB comes in January. I wouldn't be that confident... at least I haven't seen anything to indicate otherwise.

Might be announced January, shipping after delays you could be looking into April/May. Don't count on Apple doing ANYTHING timely. If you need it now, buy it now. The G4 PowerBooks have been in production for some time. Wait 8 months and grab Rev A, possibly more expensive hardware or get it now.

I've been working on G4 hardware for many years as I'm sure others have. When it comes to laptops you either want thin or want supernovas (or you simply don't care). Not sure how Apple will do it with a G5 but the current incarnation is fine.

After all if you are in it for the specs I'm not sure why your looking at an Apple in the first place, G5 or otherwise.
