locating mp3s on my imac for itunes usage
I have a very simple request from my computer/itunes. I would like my computer/itunes to locate all mp3's on my computer so they can be properly recognized and used by itunes. Errant downloads, different people putting things in different places has everything everywhere and I have no patience or ability to search them out. I know that there is a consolidate function. The problem is that there is not enough free space on my hard drive to duplicate all the music that is here and there. There is probably 40 plus GB of mp3 throughout. Any suggestions? Why does the consolidate function have to duplicate everything? Thanks,
Terry

Finding them by file extension is probably the easiest.
From the Finder Command-Shift-N to create a new folder on your desktop.
Command-F, followed by ".mp3". Click on one of the found items in the upper pane, then Command-A. All the found files in the upper pane should now be selected. Drag and drop them to the folder on your desktop whilst holding down the Command key. This will move them all to the new folder rather than duplicating them.
Repeat the Find with the other file extensions ".aiff", ".ma4", etc. etc.
That's the only way I can think of doing it.
If you have a SuperDrive you could always burn your collection to DVD to free up some free space temporarily.
Hope this helps...
