user notification system between different user accounts?

What about a user notification system which provides information

- especially status/PROGRESS information - between different user accounts?

Example:

User A renders a FinalCut Movie, than another user switches to

User B to manage his/her tasks. User A wants to switch back when his movie is finished. How does he know? Other than listening to HD spinning?

3rd party stuff already, - make me know it?

best

PS: Perhaps this is something i'd really like to see in Tiger.

How many people use multiple accounts like this on a single machine??? Is these even feasible while rendering a movie in Final Cut?

I think there's a program called LanOSD that will do this for you, but I've never played with it myself. It uses bezels to communicate to the nearest screen, whether that be a different user, or a different computer.

There are a lot more thinkable reasons to actually HAVE such a notification system.

    Off top of my head-->

    ? iCal notification

? email notification (assuming you are on DSL/Cable)

? iChat notification (Invitation to videochat)

(i think these tasks a pretty common, and IF you gonna share a computer

and (more or less) work at the same time, you'd appreciate any kind of information what's going on on the other side

    well

    ? online chess

    ? what else?

Progressbars should somehow magically emerge from the other side

    What do you think?

Acquisition and a few other apps have a preferences tickbox for "bounce dock icon on completion or d/l" or similar GUI flag that's already getting passed to the OS. It ought to be a simple Applescript to pass a similar flag to the User switching agent and blink the FUS icon or pop up a new icon for 'other user's task done'.

Getting the current user to relinquish active status might be tougher. "User A's render is done... too bad... shouldn't have left... my render is top process now."

perhaps in the not so far future this feature becomes quite common. Bouncing through userscount

I'd personally, as an admin, like to be able to log out people from the login screen, instead of having to log into their accounts individually and pressing ?-Logout User.

Windows 2000 lets you do this, and it's a useful feature. Of course there's the risk of dataloss, but what if you want to reboot? Do you really want to wait for all people to log out until you can?

As to notification, there's Growl; I wonder if they plan anything of FUS support.

It's no more dangerous than allowing the admin to shutdown the computer when multiple users are still logged in.

Well, while a wee bit overstated in this thread the "notification issue" should be adressed somehow. I'd like to see notes about other users tasks - at least on my PB If you like it or not.

Activity Monitor will allow you to view the %CPU of another users' tasks. That should solve the problem of knowing when a long running job has finished.
