ibooks and speed. WINDO*S switch? (again)
Hi I was wondering how all your ibooks are doing. I own a ibook se 466. I was wondering after upgrading the ram 128 mb, and still running os 9, am i nuts for wanting more power? Do any ibook owners seriously notice any spped improvement in the newer ibooks to justify me buying another? I am debating what I should do. I am a college student and have actually just paid for (466) this one. i am thinking about different things like sound production and my own business but i dont know if i should get another windows machine. i have "switched" but not all the way (i know that makes me bad). but i also want value apple so how do i chose ??
i am looking at other laptops on ebay and thinking of selling this one.
Any Advice?? Thx if you can !!!!!!!!!

But I do know that the new iBooks are much better than the one you've got. Faster bus, higher resolution, faster proc, bigger HD, better video card. All around better machines. I don't know where you read that a 600 is faster than the 700. It's just not possible (AFAIK). If you can scrounge up the $$, go for it. You won't be sorry.

Coming from a 450MHz G4, I can say that my 700MHz iBook is faster. Not a lot faster, but still noticable. As long as you have 256+ RAM, OS X will be tolerable, although it won't be as snappy as OS 9.
please see my posts in
this thread as they directly relate to audio performance of the 700 Mhz ibook compared to 400-550 Mhz G4s. In terms of audio work, you will be getting much less out of the 700 than out of a 450.
funny you say that Pismo. I'm using a Cube 450, a Pismo 400, and an iBook 500. of all three, the Cube is clearly the "snappiest" of the lot, with the iBook coming in last. maybe the newer iBooks (600 and 700) are better? the specs of the pismo and the cube are identical except for chip (G3 v. G4), yet what a difference, the cube is far more responsive. all this to say that a G4 may well be worth the extra investment. imac umac, maybe you should look out for a used G4 powerbook instead? or perhaps even a pismo (which has sound in, s-video, two swappable bays), which you can upgrade to a G4?

New iBooks are faster. 600 and 700MHz have 512k L2 cache and a 100MHz FSB (500 was 66). They are faster than a 450MHz G4 for general computing.
http://barefeats.com/ has some useful benchmarks. The 700MHz iBook stacks up well against the 667MHz TiBook. Not too bad.
