Mail attachment is in body of email

When I attach a document in my email (using Mail) the attachment automatically appears in the body of my email, the recipient also get it in this form. Does anyone here know how I can send attachments as an 'icon' that recipient and I needs to click before we can view?

    Depending on what it is, you may be able to ctrl-click on the item and select "view as icon". I don't know if it preserves that setting on the recipient's end though.

    Why does this happen is this standard for Mail? The format of document I'm trying to attach is .jpg.

    It is standard for images I believe. Possibly one page pdfs also. That view as icon should work for all images.
