I'm fascinated by these things. Anyone know where one is for sale? I'm preparing for a zombie attack and think one of these would be perfect.

They are pretty neat.
I know Biosphere II was having troubles a few years ago, any word since then?
But, once the nuclear zombies take over, the internet will most likely stop existing, and all these wonderful conversations we've had by the fireside will be gone forever.

I like the hilltop one, but of course it could be tumbled by some dedicated clawing.
Indeed, it's a nice design(I'm reminded of the great watch tower in the fellowship of the rings movie) but it's not very zombie proof. But, if you were well stocked inside the bunker you'd be able to ward off zombies for a long enough time, also I'm sure you could put some metal sheeting over the dirt to prevent against zombies and their clawing.
If you wanted to be really leet though, take a helicopter engine+ blade and install it in the dirt part just about 5-6 feet off the ground. that's a certified zombie killer.
Of course the ultimate advantage to an earthship or sustaining bunker is that you can build it in the middle of nowhere and still survive just fine. Coupled with some adequate surveillance systems(watch towers, binoculars, cameras..etc.) you'd be well off in the post apocalyptic future.
Wasn't there some project in Arizona to make a 50-story high self-sustaining city that only had a 2-acre footprint?

Too much energy (finite resources) necessary to keep it going.
I highly recommend everyone check out the earthship.org link Wrong Robot posted. I'm jealous of the people who can have one of these.

Well, yea, too much to keep it going constantly, but it'd be your last ditch secret weapon. Like, you'd have a tank of gas saved just for using it.

Seriously, I was first exposed to earthships my freshman year at high school. Above our school there was this place called the Ojai Valley Foundation, they were almost 100% self sustaining, they had yurts and earthships as well as more conventional styled buildings. The whole place was run mostly on solar, but it was all very efficient with minimal waste.
The place was used mainly as a retreat for aging hippies to goto and meditate for a couple weeks.
They also had a ropes course which was neat.
But yea, my science teacher in high school, was pretty awesome. He taught us about permaculture, which changed my whole outlook on a lot of things.
