PCI G4 upgrades for B&W G3

Will the 800mhz G4 PCI card from Sonnet be negated by the PCI bus? Is the PCI bus going to be a crippling bottleneck in other words, and therefore a waste of money for a Blue and White rev 1 G3 300?

Thanks for info! I've always wanted to upgrade, and a G4 ZIF for B&Ws faster than 550 would be nice but doesn't look likely, so this is really my only upgrade option I guess. Anyway thanks for any input!

    The 800 MHz G4 upgrade fromm Sonnet for 1st generation PC Macs is not a PCI card. It's a CPU daughtercard, just like all the other upgrades for those machines. They are sometimes (confusingly) called PCI upgrades to distinguish them from upgrades for the NuBus machines on one hand, and from ZIF upgrades (and now AGP-based machine upgrades) on the other hand.

    A B&W G3 won't take the Sonnet upgrade anyway. You'll have to wait for a ZIF-based upgrade with 7455 CPU's, which (suppossedly) will eventually be available.

    &lt;Edit: Bad Typing&gt;

    <a href="http://www.macosrumors.com"; target="_blank">http://www.macosrumors.com</a>; has just reported that we will finally get 800 MHz and 1 GHz (what are known as) "Zif" G4 upgrades for our b/w G3 Macs in January and dual processor upgrades later in the year.

    Right now you can only get a 600 Mhz Zif upgrade from PowerLogix. So we better wait until MacWorld San Francisco 2003 to find out who is going to sell us the real Power Upgrade.

    If we can find out sooner it's PowerLogix, they have a "just pay the difference" upgrade program taht would allow us to get the 600 in the meantime with no penality to upgrade this winter.
