Hallelujah! Minolta A-mount Digital SLR!!!

Minolta Maxxum 7d

Now I don't have to sell my kit. I've got lots of lenses for my Dynax (Maxxum) 700si, as well as other accessories, and now I can simply swap between film and digital!

Actually, a long time ago Minolta had a 1 megapixel (if I recall correclty) A-mount DSLR (probably the first DSLR ever available) (EDIT: RD175, 1.75 Megapixel, SCSI!!!, PC Card Slot), but at the time, the price was close to $4000 US and features were extremely limited (like F=4.0 Aperture Max). When this line was cancelled, I had given up hope of there ever being an A-mount Digital SLR when Minolta went exclusively with the Vectis lens system for their DSLR range. This release surprised the hell out of me and I couldn't be happier.

I've wanted a DSLR for a while, and was trying to decide between Canon and Nikon, and extremely annoyed that I'd have to start all over with lenses. I've always loved my 700si (it was one of the most fully featured camera bodies ever released), and I thought it was an awesome camera body. I can't wait to get the 7d and I want it so much I'm going to put of the purchase of a new PowerBook to get it instead.

Actually, one of the drawbacks is that the 700si had 1/12000 shutter speed (with high-speed flash sync), and th 7d has only 1/4000 with 1/160 flash sync. No more shots of those shooting bullets.

But anti-shake is a well worthwhile trade-off!

As long as the price is under US$2000 I'm getting this camera before Christmas.

Also, as one might recall, I like taking hand held low-light natural light photos (like of a band playing in a club). With my F=1.2 lens, Anti-Shake technology and up to ISO 3200 sensitivity, I can virtually take hand held photos in the dark. Nice.

    Indeed .

It's great news that new DSLR's are being released so that 35mm users can migrate across to digital without having to replace everything. Although I had cheap consumer lenses that weren't up to the task of taking clear images on a 6MP sensor, so I ended up upgrading anyway . And I'm about to do the same again to get some ofthe Canon 'L' series of lenses .

That new Nikon is a monster! I wonder how the much rumoured Canon 1Ds mk11 will compare? You see kids, competition can be a good thing .

Can anyone tell me if the Canon EOS 20D is a good SLR camera to start with? I am thinking of buying one for my dad, he enjoys photography.

I have a 20D and lot's of other goodies and i can tell you that : It's the best D-SLR under 2000$. Upgraded from 10D and it's noticibly better camera.

    Please check : http://www.fredmiranda.com/

or directly go to the : http://www.fredmiranda.com/forum/

It's a very nice&fast Cam.dont buy the kit (The kit with the Canon 18-85IS lens)

    Best bang for buck L series lenses : For wide : 17-40F4L (Around 650$)and the zoom :70-200F4L(around 600$) .

If you dont want to spend your money to L series lenses here is a good walkaround lens: Tamron's 28-70 F 2.8 DI Canon mount lens. It's around 350$ and it's much better quality than the Canon's consumer zoom lenses (including my old 28-135 IS)

It's a very very good camera you will not be disappointed .

    A few 70-200F4L examples : http://homepage.mac.com/merts/PhotoAlbum8.html

    Macro examples : http://homepage.mac.com/merts/PhotoAlbum14.html

Also there is 75$ lens that could do wonders ! : Canon 50mm f 1.8 prime.

    Kind regards

    Mert,

    I've just upgraded my lens collection, and funnily enough, it now consists of the 17-40 f4 L, 70-200 f4 L and 50 f1.8 . Although I'm only on a 10D .

Great pictures there! I have high hopes for these lenses . I love the colours, are the shots straight from the camera, or did you tweak them in PS?

    Regards,

    Dave.

Your photographs are wonderful. Thank you for the advice, Mert. Now to see if I can get my sis to split the cost with me.

Also, what memory card and what capacity do you recommend?

You have very nice lenses 10D is a nice camera as you allready know.(I am still keeping my old 10D).Some framing&usm mask is applied nearly every photo other than that i prefer just auto level's & contrast.Canon need's some usm adjusments.

Just push your 17-40 to F8&F11.It's a sweet spot for this lens.

Thank you for your kind words talksense

If you want to shoot only raw then you need 2xSanDisk 1GB Ultra II Compact Flash Card. For jpeg's : Single 1GB card is enough for around 240 photo's.

This is the best card i have ever used. It's very fast and the price performance ratio is very good.(It's around 99US$): http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg...photo&n=507846

If my wife permits! I have to buy another telephoto lens.

You have to be nice to your sister

Talksense : Mert gave you some good advices here.

I am also an happy owner of both the 10 D and the 20 D. The 20 D is a mature camera. The only real limiting factor of this camera will be you.

The 20 D recquieres great lenses, the 17-85 IS is a great walkaround lens, but if you are more interest in quality the 17-40 L is a better performer, and can be used on any Canon DLSR camera.

The 70-200 F4 is also a great lens, but for cheap price a sigma 70-300 apo will do a fair job.

The tamron 28-75 has the best value for the money of the market undoubtely. I recommand to choose this one, if you can't afford the 17-40 L.

For the CF card, start with 2 512 MB card : they are not expansive, and bigger card will came later.
