How To Alter iTunes purchased music?

I've finally gotten on the iTunes bandwagon, and I have a simple question. Some of the music I have downloaded sounds "muddy" to me. These are mostly old songs from the 60s and 70s. Can anyone recommend software to alter these files and clean up the sound a bit? Audio Hijack Pro? I know nothing about doing this, so everything will be trial and error for a simple mind.

Check www.osxaudio.com for two track editors. There might be some low cost apps that will do what you want.

Thanks for your suggestion. Pardon the dumb question, but what kind of app am I looking for? Sound editor?

Edited: I looked for a "two track editor" and came up empty.

Yes. There is an app called DSP Quattro that will definitely do what you want but it's like $100 so you might want to see if there are cheaper apps out there that support AAC. Hell your initial thoughts on Hijack Pro might work since it supports AAC, and AU plugins. I'm thinking that HJP and some free AU plugins might do the trick.

check your itunes prefs and make sure the sound enchancer is turned off. Although its supposed to help sound, I think it sucks.

Thanks for the suggestions. I found a free app (audacity) that will work on MP4 files but not protected tracks. I turned off sound enhancer, and I noticed a small difference. I'll look at audio hijack to see if does what I want. Dare I say, these apps are a bit complicated.

Edited: I went with Audio Hijack Pro. At $32, it's reasonable, and its help manual is straightforward. Plus the ability to capture FM made it an easy choice.
