I have the Radeon 9800XT. should i download the new drivers? if so, how do i go about it in a way that wont screw me over? this is a crucial time for me with video stuff, so i cant afford to have anything go wrong. thanks.

If you're talking about the recent ATI releases...they're not driver updates...they're ROM and feature updates.
Anyone with real knowledge if 'we' should use the update?
thanks.
The ROM update also holds the older ROMs in case you want to revert back to the ROM you have presently. Give it a try and if it causes any problems (it's pretty unlikely) downgrade back to the ROM you have now.

so is this like a program or something? if these arent drivers, where do i go about seeing what versions i have now and what do i do with the new ones?

It's ROM update (or firmware update if you like)...firmware updates normally don't bring performance differences, they only fix hardware-related problems or add new features.
Chances are you're not affected by any problems needing a firmware update. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.
I upgraded because I wanted to check out the new capability offered to Radeon 8500 owners called VersaVision which allows your monitor to be turned 90 degrees. Instead of getting 800x600, I'd be getting 600x800 resolutions.
The ROM updates only affect Retail cards. They are not for OEM cards. The ATI Displays app is just a utility which includes OpenGL Overrides, which allows one to set things like FSAA and Anisotropic Filtering on a per app basis. It's particularly useful for OpenGL games which do not have builtin options for the overridable settings. For instance, you can turn on FSAA in Quake 3 and Ghost Recon. Version 4.4 of the Displays app includes official support for OEM cards. The only kext installed is the ATITVOut.kext, which shouldn't affect 2D or 3D applications.

In such cases, apply the generic instruction: leave the system as is.
