Can't get Microsoft Remote Desktop to work

I've been trying to connect to my friend's PC (running Windows XP Pro) using Remote Desktop Client for Mac, but can't get it to work.

My friend's PC is connected to the Internet through the Linksys wireless router. I've setup DMZ on my friend's PC already, but when I try typing the public IP of his Internet connection (the IP set on the wireless router) into the connection text field and press connect, RDC keeps giving me "The client could not connect to the remote computer" error.

Be sure you have remote access turned on on your friend's PC.

We're talking RDC by Micosoft and not the Apple Remote Desktop !

I had a problem like that for the Microsoft Remote Desktop. You might try connecting it directly through a router or wireless on the same network or same device. Sometimes while an Airport is connected to the router, it may not be able to route it. Try that.

I'm a real newbie at this, but shouldn't you be addressing the IP Address of the XP machine, rather than the router? Also, don't you need to have a user account on the target XP machine that is part of the Remote Desktop Users group? The exception to this is if you are connecting as an Administrator from your machine (or a runas Administer), I believe?

Lastly, wouldn't it be easier to just use the Remote Assistance feature instead (he emails you an invitation)?

Both computers must be running Windows XP to use this feature.

You need to forward the port from the router to whatever IP address the router supplying his computer, assuming he's using DHCP. It should be something like 192.168.XXX.XXX. Most routers have an administration panel that you can access through a web browser to forward the port. For instance I have an Asante router. If I type 192.168.123.254 in to Safari I can access my router's admin panel. Check your user's guide for instructions on how to do it.

I'd try out RealVNC for the the server on the Winbox and Chicken of the VNC on the Mac. This combo works great for me on my Win2k IBM.
