Video card shut off?

My brother has a Sony VAIO running XP with an NVIDA GEForce 4 MX420 (I think, from what I can still read on the receipt). He tried to watch a DVD on his computer the other day and Windows told him that he was unable to due to the video out being enabled on his card. So he disabled the video out and the card shut itself off entirely. He has no display now.

So I tried starting up in safe mode, and that didn't work, it refuses to start in safe mode. Tried re-enabling VGA mode, it worked at first showing me the XP startup screen, but than things went dark and I heard the boot sound.

Any ideas as to what to do? Thanks a lot!

if you have a spare video card, remove the currentone and put in the new one so that you can boot, loading in a different set of video drivers, then swap back and windows will do a fresh install of your video card. The settings should go back to default....
