Powerbook Questions!

I'm going to college for Computer Science in Java and I'm wanting a powerbook!

I've heard the autodim feature on the monitors are bad, that it's either too dark or too bright. I heard this from someone with an ibook, so I don't know if they have made any changes or upgrades, or if he's just wrong!

Also, is it easy to add more memory to it? I'd rather pay for 256megs and add an additional 512 for a lot less. What speed does it use? DDR400?

Thanks!

Also, I forgot to ask if there are any known features that they may add that I should hold out for. I know Tiger is going to come out, but I can upgrade that later and I'll be buying it sooner than that

The current batch of powerbooks all use DDR PC2700 (333 MHz). Adding memory is very easy. I have had no problems with the brightness on mine, 17pb. I don't know of any new features coming out and I think the pb's are great as they are.

The things you might want to get with your pb are, iPod, iSight, CoolPad and a media reader for whatever type of camera you have. I use those constantly. You should also keep a book mark on version tracker http://www.versiontracker.com/macosx/ . Besides the big apps that you will be using it is nice to have some good utilities like weatherpop, Gmailstatus, Menu Calender and others.

Awesome. I'm guessing there are only 2 RAM slots in the notebooks and thy use the same ram a PC would? I've never owned or looked inside of a laptop before, though I've built all the ones I currently use. Same physical size right?

thanks for your other suggestions! I don't use video input so I don't think the iSight will be suited well for me, but I'll make sure I keep everything else in mind

Be sure to get the 1x512 memory config for the 15" and not the 2x256. I would leave you wil no empty slot to beef up memory!

In general I think a PB should have 1GB of memory, that's well balanced and does not cost a fortune (2x512).
