And I don't have backups of all the songs.
How do I restore the link without losing my songs so I can do "manual update" as normal?

Any idea why the link failed?
Here are some possible ideas for troubleshooting.
1. Hardware/software problem on the computer side.
Try connecting to another Mac. Try connecting another iPod to your Mac.
If the different iPod doesn't connect to your Mac and your iPod connects to another Mac it seems likely the trouble is with your Mac.
2. Hardware problem on the iPod side.
Try connecting the iPod to another Mac. If it doesn't appear then it seems likely the iPod hardware interface failed.
3. Software problem on iPod side.
Try to reset the iPod. The instructions may be different for different versions but are in the manual.
4. Bad cable.
Try another cable.
5. Try running a disk recovery application. If the disk is the problem you might get far enough along to recover your music.
Hope this helps.

That's much clearer. Someone else may have a better idea. I think you need to find an app on version tracker that will let you copy songs off the iPod then wipe it clean and start again.
