I have no idea, except that maybe your list of outgoing mail servers has disappeared so it doesn't think you can send messages. I have not had any problem with the security updates.
I did the security update 2004-09-30 and now my mail "reply" button has gone dead. This has occured on BOTH my G5/Dual 2 and G4/12" PB.
The same thing has happened to me. I recently upgraded my iMac G3 400 to Panther (which I love). Before I recently installed all the updates, I had no problems whatsoever with Mail.
Now, whenever I hit "reply" on particular emails, nothing happens. (It works on some and not on others. Weird.) Then, when I close out Mail and re-launch it later, the blank reply I attempted to create earlier appears, as many times as I originally tried (in one case, there were almost 20 of them, the first time I discovered this).
