This is more of a Genius Bar thing, I should think, but anyway:
To burn a CD in the Finder:
1. Stick in a CD; give it a name when prompted;
2. The CD blank will mount on the Desktop; drag the files you wish to burn to it;
3. Drag the CD to the trash; this will cause the CD to be burnt.
4. There is no 4.
To put a file on a ZIP disk:
1. stick the ZIP disk in your ZIP drive;
2. the disk will mount on the desktop;
3. drag the file to the disk. Done.
You can also replace step 3 for burning a CD with a few alternatives:
3b. You can go to the File menu in the Finder application and there is a "Burn CD..." option near the bottom of the menu.
3c. In the sidebar of a Finder window, when a blank CD is inserted, a small "radioactive" symbol appears next to it. This symbol represents "burn CD" and if you click it, it will also burn the CD. You can drag and drop files right onto that CD icon in the Finder's sidebar too.
Also, a .zip disk should also appear in the Finder's sidebar when mounted. You can likewise just drag and drop items onto the zip icon there, and eject the zip using the eject icon next to its name in the sidebar.
