I just posted this at the Apple Discussions site, but I value you guys' opinions more, so, here it is:

I've had my PB12inch since 2 months and 256MB ram is horrible. But thats beside the point.

When I run too many apps, especially something like Azureus (Java application) and it takes too much ram, my whole system just completely freezes. I'm a power user, I know all the tricks and what not to try and unblock it. I've reset PRAM, fixed permissions, etc. I just thought this is a problem related to ram running out and some obscure OSX problem, not hardware.

I finally received a 1GB stick of Ram from Dane-Elec today and followed the instructions to install the Ram, taking all usual precautions. The specs of the ram are the following:

1GB DDR 333MHz CL 2.5 PC2700S-25330

Start up is fine. "About This Mac" shows 1.25GB DDR RAM.

After starting up Safari, all ok. I start iTunes. TOTAL freeze. Restart, tried iTunes first, then Safari, a minute later, total freeze. I restart resetting PRAM 3 times in a row, and after a few minutes after launching a few apps, total freeze.

I try to boot off the Apple Care TechTool Deluxe 3.03 CD and it doesnt work (I've already seen other threads that say that its not compatible with my Mac... way to go Apple for quality assurance!) Nontheless I install TechTool and do a RAM check: No problems on either RAM.

I then rebooted from the Apple Hardware Test DVD and do a short and long test. Again, no problems found.

I restart with the extra ram.... wham... freeze.

So... whats the problem? The RAM or the PB? I will get the Ram changed ONCE and if THAT still doesnt work, then I'm throwing away this stupid Powerbook.

Any possible suggestions?

ZO: Sounds like your 1GB RAM stick is bad, even though TechTool says it's OK. Remove the new RAM and see if reverting to the on-board 256MB solves your issues. If yes, you'll know for sure you have a bad 1GB RAM stick. Hope Dane-Elec has a good exchange policy.
